SACRIFICE
Story By Dr Deochan Dass May 2007
(A story I heard from the Elders - stories acquire new dimensions from time to time)
There was once a very rich man. He was accustomed to have a feast annually in which he gave charity to holy men. On one such occasion he included the Great Saint Kabir Saheb. The feast was eventually held and many a holy man attended, but Kabir Saheb was not there. The rich man thought to himself that he should take his gift personally to the Sage and enquire about his absence from the popular feast. Thus, he took the time out to meet Kabir Saheb.
The man met Kabir Saheb and, holding out the gift to him, said,"I looked forward to meeting you specially at the Yajna." "Why 'specially' enquired the Saint. "Because you are unique in the ways of SACRIFICE", the man replied." Kabir Saheb pondered for a while and then said, "If it is that you are looking at 'sacrifice' then this gift is most appropriate for you, so keep it because you have made a greater sacrifice than me." The man was stunned and looked forward to an explanation. Whereupon Kabir Saheb continued, "You see my friend, you have sacrificed 'God' for things of this world, and I, well I have sacrificed only worldly things for God. Your sacrifice is indeed, by far, greater." The rich man thought about this profound reply. He eventually became a 'Kabir Follower'.
